VCCS Varsity Boys named Phenom Hoops New Year's Bash Champions
The Kings began all three games of the tournament with a slow start fighting from behind. Friday, they faced off against East Mecklenburg defeating them 63-43. Saturday, they beat Hickory Ridge 82-62. As shared earlier, the Kings were down early Monday night in a real bout with Queens Grant Charter. We actually aided them in the lead by missing shots, and not boxing out, not to mention Justyn Whitfield who was named MVP of the two previous games was facing a full-court press whenever he was within sniffing distance of the ball. The Kings had scored only 11 points well into the second quarter. But then, third quarter came and our guys showed up battling back getting within five to seven points. Halfway through the fourth quarter, the Kings took the lead and it was back and forth from there. The game was so intense we all nearly resigned to whichever way it goes this was a good game. But our boys would not be denied. They stayed the course. With fourteen seconds on the clock, Christian Petty drives down the middle and scores taking the Kings up 57-56. Queens Grant then headed towards their basket, passes the ball down court only to be intercepted by Justyn Whitfield, the buzzer sounds, and VCCS wins the game. A barn burner indeed. Great job TEAM. Way to rally together! Special thanks to our sixth man the Kings Fans who were with us every step of the way!
